In Spanish class today we read a beautiful poem by Cuban poet, José Martí. It's both enchanting and empowering, and while I thought about including an English translation, I knew such a change in language would not sound as pleasant nor capture the meaning behind Martí's carefully crafted words.
So take this form of artistic expression as your incentive to learn Spanish!
"Versos sencillos" de José Martí
Yo soy un hombre sincero
De donde crece la palma,
Y antes de morirme quiero
Echar mis versos del alma.
Yo vengo de todas partes,
Y hacia todas partes voy:
Arte soy entre las artes.
En los montes, monte soy.
Oigo un suspiro, a través
De las tierras y la mar,
Y no es un suspriso, --es
Que mi hijo va a despertar.
Con los pobres de la tierra
Quiero yo mi suerte echar:
El arroyo de la sierra
Me complace más que el mar.
Todos es hermoso y constante,
Todo es música y razón,
Y todo, como el diamante,
Antes de luz es carbón.
Mi verso es de un verde claro
Y de un carmín encendido:
Mi verso es un ciervo herido
Que busca en el monte amparo.
